Anime Manga Movie Recommendation

Recommendation Room: November 2019

So, in order to celebrate Veteran’s Day, which was truthfully two days ago, I’ve decided that this month’s anime and manga genre will be… military. It’s a strange topic to have as a genre classification, but it’s anime, so we can’t really question a lot of things. Below, you will see three recommendations from me that are tagged with the genre ‘military’. Feel free to add any others you want to recommend others to check out under this genre, as well.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex

Episodes52 + specials, side stories, and spin-offs

Reasons to check it out:

It shows a future filled with cybernetics.

It’s the main inspiration for the Matrix movies.

Season 2 has episodes that are practically love letters to various films, such as: Taxi Driver, The Matrix, Blade runner, Full Metal Jacket, and Wings of Desire.

The techniques for the Laughing Man are based on the real-life Glico-Morinaga case from Japan from the 1980s.

The lyrics for the opening theme song for season one, Inner Universe, are in English, Russian, and Latin.

Fullmetal Alchemist

I know what you’re all thinking, “Why the heck wouldn’t you just watch Brotherhood instead?” Well, you’re not wrong. The show is phenomenal. But, below are some reasons why you should also check out the manga, if not just to support the mangaka.

Reasons to check it out:

The manga includes some super fun extra content.

At the end of each volume, there’s a memorial section for characters that have died.

Arakawa sensei created her own little version of Where’s Waldo?  She hid a character named Mobuo Mobuta in many of the panels in the manga. This is one example:

Arakawa interviewed real World War II veterans for the Ishval War Arc.

Many of the military offers are named after military vehicles.

Porco Rosso

Length1 hour and 33 minutes

Reasons to check it out:

It’s about a veteran World War II pilot that decides to become a bounty hunter.

The main character is cursed to look like a pig.

It contains a love triangle.

Pigs can finally fly.

It’s a Studio Ghibli film. Do you need any better reason than this?

I’m a 27-year-old story-telling fan. I enjoy all forms of media, including anime, manga, literature, films, video games, music, and everything else in between. I’ve been writing short stories and novels for myself as a hobby for as long as I can remember. I’ve never considered myself good enough to become published, but I’m hoping to change that someday. I’m a huge sucker for characters, so that’s usually what will make or break a majority of stories for me. Other than that, I spend my days working and trying to pay my bills (how fun, right?).
