Yami Shibai: Japanese Ghost Stories 7 – Episode 6: The Veranda

Random Commentary:

  • “It’s for self-defense…” Yeah, she was just waiting for an excuse to grab that knife to use it against someone.
  • If I were that scared, I’d leave the damn apartment, not freaking stay there.
  • “It’s just the wind,” he says, in a shaky, not-at-all-scared voice.
  • Why was he just kind of… bobbing in place after opening the sliding door? That looked goofy.
  • The moment she laughed = the moment he should’ve peaced the F out.

Final Thoughts:

I actually enjoyed this episode quite a bit. It did a pretty solid job of setting up a relatively creepy atmosphere. We at least understand by the end why the idiot never decided to leave the apartment even though she was petrified of being there. The reveal of what was haunting her outside of her veranda was legitimately pretty creepy, too, so I was pleased. It didn’t make me jump or anything, but it did give me the heeby-jeebies with the way that woman/creature was moving her fingers and the sound that she was making with her nails. Again, sound is a huge factor in scaring me. The poor “hot” guy won’t be leaving her place any time soon, though. I guess he really should’ve thought twice about maybe canceling that booty call and just taking the night for some self-reflection.

I’m glad this episode didn’t end up being terribly disappointing to me like the last one was. Ugh, I just want to pretend that wasn’t even a thing.

Anyway, looking forward to watching more! Onwards to the next!

I’m a 27-year-old story-telling fan. I enjoy all forms of media, including anime, manga, literature, films, video games, music, and everything else in between. I’ve been writing short stories and novels for myself as a hobby for as long as I can remember. I’ve never considered myself good enough to become published, but I’m hoping to change that someday. I’m a huge sucker for characters, so that’s usually what will make or break a majority of stories for me. Other than that, I spend my days working and trying to pay my bills (how fun, right?).

  1. Great post! 🙂 I think I respect this episode a little more now that I’ve thought through the story more thoroughly, but I still find myself confused at some aspects and the scare factor really isn’t there for me. The way the fingers were animated was indeed pretty creepy, though. I was surprised because Yami Shibai doesn’t usually have stuff animated so erratically like that. It was a nice touch. However, I won’t lie, there was a small part of me that was thinking, as she was moving her fingers like that, that she was going ‘Let me in….I’m gonna tickle youuuu!’ lol I’m glad you found more enjoyment in it. ^_^

    • Yes! I agree that the scare factor wasn’t totally there, but because I’m super weird with certain noises, it kind of triggered that fear a bit more than the actual story scaring me. The animated fingers were definitely a first and kind of looked a bit creepy, as you said. That was a nice touch and I think it’s something they should think about incorporating a bit more in the future because it added something different that the other episodes never had.

Also, LOL at your tickling thought. Now that’s all I can think about, too, thanks xD

Thanks for reading and commenting! I’m looking forward to reading your thoughts on the rest of the episodes.
