Yami Shibai: Japanese Ghost Stories 7 – Episode 5: Notice of Termination Service

Random Commentary:

  • Having two funerals in the same area at the same time? That’s not ominous at all…
  • Room 404… Error… Not found… Uh-oh.
  • I hope the girl from The Ring crawls out of that TV and eats him whole.

Final Thoughts:

This was a stupid episode.

The buildup that’s common for these types of stories was almost non-existent.

The guy himself was surprisingly irritating for the short amount of time we get to see him.

The story and ‘big reveal’ made no sense whatsoever since we never got confirmation that the people at the door were the people that had died in that town.

Plus, every second of it was utterly predictable.

Ugh, what a disappointing episode it turned out to be. I sure hope that the others don’t make me feel the same way about them. We had a pretty decent start to this 7th season and I don’t want it to go down the drain halfway through. Oh well, fingers crossed that the next one isn’t this horrible. Onwards to the next!

I’m a 25-year-old story-telling fan. I enjoy all forms of media, including anime, manga, literature, films, video games, music, and everything else in between. I’ve been writing short stories and novels for myself as a hobby for as long as I can remember. I’ve never considered myself good enough to become published, but I’m hoping to change that someday. I’m a huge sucker for characters, so that’s usually what will make or break a majority of stories for me. Other than that, I spend my days working and trying to pay my bills (how fun, right?).

  1. It is a funny episode in hindsight if not just for main character stupidity. ‘Ladeeda, oh funeral. That’s sad. Ladeeda, oh another funeral right next door…That’s…creepy. Ladeeda, oh look the TV in my hotel room is playing nothing but a creepy staticy memorial for the people who died in this town and the narrator is just repeating one phrase over and over. What lousy TV service. I’m going to complain!’ lol

I chalked up the reasoning behind the deaths being just a simple horror story murder town. I’d think the people on the funeral photos are fellow travelers and anyone who visits their town gets killed. Perhaps the villagers themselves are supernatural and they were the ones at the door. However, I really don’t know of any reason why they’d be doing it besides simply ‘murder town.’

I enjoyed it at face value, but I can definitely see how it’d be a weak episode for others. Great post! I look forward to your thoughts on future episodes! 🙂

    • This is precisely what I love! I hated the episode and you can see exactly why and then I can totally understand why you enjoyed it in comparison. It’s great that both of us are checking this particular season out at the same time because we get to see two totally different perspectives. I can’t wait to read your opinions for the other episodes!

Also, your explanation about the town itself makes so makes more sense to me now… I don’t know why I didn’t think the dead people were travelers, too… It still doesn’t change my mind about the episode, but I understand it more now! Thanks for opening my eyes to that! 🙂
